Escales - Application
Bise Noire is already preparing for its fifth sailing season at sea! The 40-foot steel sailboat model "Île Disko" left Italy in 2022 to explore the Albanian and Greek coasts. It is parked in Athens from where it expects to be able to continue exploring with you the shores of the Mediterranean in the Aegean Sea in 2023.

This year, we are taking advantage of a spring break to strengthen our collaborations with structures in Greece and Switzerland and improve our formula. We offer this fall residencies lasting three weeks from Athens. The residencies will consist of two weeks on Bise Noire followed by a week of immobility in collaboration with artistic centers in the Cyclades.

Accommodation during this third week will be partly in the place and partly aboard Bise Noire. Exchanges with the artists residing on site, and the provision of creative spaces are planned for this occasion. We also ask registered artists for restitution at the end of their stay in the form of an exit from residency, presentation of current research, MasterClass, or other forms depending on your proposals.

Dates and locations are guaranteed where possible, including weather and other contingencies. Of course, the candidates can formulate proposals and wishes in geographical terms as long as they place themselves on our route and that they do not constrain our possibilities of hosting the next residences. If you have the slightest doubt about the feasibility of your desire, do not hesitate to contact us.
We will take the time to explore several islands during the two weeks of navigation.Mainly in coastal navigation, the itinerary promotes the links between the boat and the land by marking almost daily stops at anchor. These stops are of variable duration and their duration depends on the desire to explore the surroundings, or not. Sailing nevertheless takes a remarkable place in daily life and, even if no participation in the maneuvers is requested, the life of the boat and the group can take a dominating place (ranging from constraints linked to weather conditions to cooking in which everyone takes part, in principle). It is also necessary to take into account a time of adaptation when arriving on board, in particular with regard to seasickness, but also to tame the dynamics of the group.

The project can be considered as research and is not necessarily linked to a specific material production. We invite you to browse through the Escales project file below before contacting us. We hope that you will be able to find an echo with your practice and of course remain open to any proposal.

The budget for the three weeks is 1200 euros. This amount (including in particular a contribution to the upkeep of the sailboat) is a minimum collective participation which makes long-term residencies possible. However, we do not want the cost to be a limiting factor and it can be re-discussed according to everyone's means, do not hesitate to contact us about this.
Since this year, we also offer a support price at 1800 euros (or depending on the possibilities).
Count refueling (including food, diesel as well as any costs at the ports) in addition in the form of an on-board cash box, at the rate of approximately 70 euros per week. The cabin of the boat will accommodate up to four people simultaneously, in addition to the crew. Please take into account space constraints and technical limits (the boat being energy self-sufficient thanks to solar panels). Do not hesitate to ask us any questions!
In order to compose homogeneous groups, please explain your project to us in a maximum of one A4 page (to be sent by email until April 2), by answering the following questions and taking into account the route plan presented above:
